Oct 30 ART OF THE BOOK: AN ART BOOKS PRESS EXHIBITION
The Art of
the Book consists of 18 artists exploring traditional
techniques like
letterpress, offset printing, to constructions,
sculpture and zines, &
raises the question, "What defines a book
as art?" Some of the 18 artists
included in the show are: Claire Bolton, Don
Myhre, Kimber Fisher,
Catherine Michaels, Emily Martin, and Julie
Chen.

the lively Irish half-uncial
letterforms. Students will study from historical

LETTERS AND LUMINOSITY, PART I Rebecca Wild

for all artists and
lovers of letters and words who wish to investigate
new applications for their letterforms. Through
the use of luminous materials, students will
create pieces rich in texture, line and "color"
by using black and white
and all the values that lie between. The cache
of tools will include
graphite, ink, broad edge pens, brushes, pencils,
and various resist

Sept 17-Nov 19 INTRODUCTION
TO LEATHER BINDING Rory Sparks.(10 Sessions)
Fri 9am-12pm This highly-structured, step-by-step
course offers a thorough
introduction to working with leather for bookbinding.
Students will
complete an English-style quarter leather sewn
on raised cords. Decorative
papers will be made in class to use as covering
and/or endpapers and to
give the book a personal touch. Hand-sewn endbands,
simple gold tooling
and stamping will further embellish the books.

Sept 25-26 SIMPLE JAPANESE
PAPERMAKING Jill Vartenigian. Sat & Sun,
10am-5pm This weekend workshop will introduce
you to the techniques of
making simple Japanese style paper using kozo
fiber. Learn how to cook and
prepare the kozo for sheet making, and make
your own sheets of paper to
take home. Most of the workshop will focus on
the process of sheet
formation. Time will be set aside to discuss
adding imagery while forming
your sheets, printing on the formed sheets,
and setting up your own home

BELLTOWN BOOK ARTISTS --have an opportunity
to meet
other book artists and calligraphers, to show
off your work and get
feedback on recent projects completed or in
progress. It can also be a
chance to visit studios of various book artists
and calligraphers. There
are no minutes, agendas or dues. All who work
with books or in book arts
are invited. Meets on the fourth (or last) Tuesday
of the month The next
meeting will be on Thursday 30 September 2004
6:30pm, at the Uptown
Espresso Café, 2504 4th Avenue,in Belltown,
plenty of street parking.
