Boxes with Bonnie Thompson Norman

Boxes with Bonnie Thompson Norman

BAG Workshop

4.30.11 - 5.1.11 | 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Come spend an engaging weekend learning how to make beautiful and well-constructed custom boxes for books or other uses. The workshop project will be constructing a finished clamshell box (base and lid trays mounted in case), and a model box left semi-finished. Each student will be able to make a cloth covered or cloth and paper covered box custom-sized for a book they provide. The model box will be left semi-finished, to be used as a reference when making future projects. This class will provide the opportunity to learn measuring, construction, and covering techniques that can be used for a wide array of box and enclosure construction.

For Bonnie Thomson Norman books are a passion as well as a profession. Bonnie has been proprietor of The Windowpane Press, a letterpress printing and book arts studio, for about thirty years. From early experience working for bookseller Jake Zeitlin in Los Angeles, to being Studio Director of the Women’s Building, and working with letterpress Printer Patrick Reagh, nearly every job she has held has in some way involved books or art. After moving to Seattle in 1993, Bonnie went to work as a hand bookbinder for Puget Bindery, and teaches classes through the University of Washington Experimental College, Seattle Central Community College, and School of Visual Concepts. She spends evenings and weekends teaching printing and bookmaking from her home studio. Bonnie creates artist books, many of which are the results of collaborations with class participants or friends. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and is in numerous university and public collections.

The workshop will be held at The Windowpane Press, N.E. Seattle
