Fabric Books with Lois Morrison

Fabric Books with Lois Morrison

BAG Workshop

April 4-5, 2009 | 9:30 am - 5:00 pm

A  Frolic of Bears with book artist Lois Morrison, Saturday & Sunday 9:30-5:00, Maps/Special Collections Classroom, Suzzallo Library.

This workshop explores techniques for making fabric books. The concentration will be on sewing techniques with a foray into making a rubber stamp and methods for printing directly onto the book fabric. If time allows, we will look at other techniques. Lois Morrison describes herself:

“Missionary parents are responsible for my being born in the then Belgian Congo where I was raised & schooled, off and on, until eighteen. At that point, I came to the United States & Mary Baldwin College for women in Staunton, Virginia from which I graduated with a B.A. After one year in Washington, D.C. & two years in Japan I began my MFA at Indiana University, which I finished at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Four years of teaching Art History & Studio at Mary Baldwin ended with a move to Leonia, N.J. (5 minutes from the George Washington Bridge into Manhattan) where I still live.”

“All my life that I can remember, I’ve drawn. Sewing was a necessity in my youth & nearly forever. I began to sew into my paintings, developing a fabric, bas-relief technique & making wood/cloth sculptures. Finally, a friend asked me to make a book for a show she was curating, & since then I have been obsessed with making them—primarily in fabric, but-in order to make them more available—in paper editions also.”

“At 75 I know I’m in my endgame & making books is part of my way to play it well.”

The workshop will be limited to 10 people & will cost $150 for BAG members, $180 for non-BAG members. There will be a $15-$40 supply fee, (depending on what tools you can bring), payable in class. Sandra Kroupa is acting as workshop coordinator.
